Crazy DMV Stories

With the joy of driving comes the dread of dealing with the DMV.  Since the early days of the automobile, going to the DMV has been a fate that no driver can escape.  Naturally, this long standing love-hate relationship comes with more than its fair share of shocking stories and crazy incidents.  Everything from the classic less than satisfactory service to bizarre sightings, it all goes down in DMV history.  Though they cannot possibly all be accounted for, there is certainly no shortage of unusual DMV stories.

The classic DMV story usually involves some sort of mistake in paperwork – and the DMV refusing to acknowledge said mistake.  For many, this may result in hours or days wasted trying to straighten out all the necessary paperwork.  However, one man in San Jose reported to a local news station that he had been in a dispute with the DMV over a fee that was 4 years old.  It wasn’t until the news station stepped in to question the DMV that they offered to return the money and acknowledge their mistake.  Talk about dedication.

Not all unpleasant DMV experiences are caused by the DMV itself; sometimes the people waiting at the DMV can be more of a headache than all the paperwork and fees combined.  In DMV’s all across the country, police are called on a surprisingly regular basis to break up fist fights and other incidents involving customers arguing over who was next in line.  Although with the added frustration of being at the DMV, it doesn’t take much for a situation to escalate out of control quickly.

Some DMV stories are simply too shocking to be explained rationally.  In May of 2012, a New York man was convicted of fraud, after being caught on camera at the DMV disguised as his dead mother.  The man had doctored her death certificate and disguised himself as her so that he could continue to collect her social security checks. You can read more about that story here.

The DMV certainly has its fair share of memorable events, so it comes as no surprise that the average motorist tries to avoid going there at all costs.  However, even with no complications, cars still require registration every year.  For some motorists even that is one visit too many.  Luckily, there are other options available for certain services.  For example auto registration in Las Vegas can now be done through third party companies, thus sparing motorists from having to visit the DMV.
